Improving Number Foundations in Preschoolers: ANS versus Symbolic Knowledge
نویسندگان
چکیده
The current study examined whether preschoolers who are low achievers (LA) on mathematical tasks benefit more from a training programme that focuses on magnitude comparisons or ANS abilities (PLUS games) compared to games that target symbolic knowledge (DIGIT games). Twenty-four preschoolers played PLUS games and 21 children played DIGIT games 3 times per week for 5 weeks. Performance scores were compared to 25 typical control children who did not play any games. All children were assessed pre and post-intervention on Test of Early Mathematics (TEMA), a computerized ANS task, the Give a Number task (Wynn, 1990) to assess cardinality and a counting and Digit Recognition task. The results showed that, although the DIGIT and PLUS groups performed lower than the Control group, both PLUS and DIGIT games improved mathematical abilities in LA children. These results suggest that there is a complex interaction between ANS, symbolic, and formal mathematical abilities.

Two Potential Mechanisms Underlying the Link between Approximate Number Representations and Symbolic Math in Preschool Children
The approximate number system (ANS) is frequently considered to be a foundation for the acquisition of uniquely human symbolic numerical capabilities. However, the mechanism by which the ANS influences symbolic number representations and mathematical thought remains poorly understood. Here, we tested the relation between ANS acuity, cardinal number knowledge, approximate arithmetic, and symboli...

The numerical cognition literature offers two views to explain numerical and arithmetical development. The unique-representation view considers the approximate number system (ANS) to represent the magnitude of both symbolic and non-symbolic numbers and to be the basis of numerical learning. In contrast, the dual-representation view suggests that symbolic and non-symbolic skills rely on differen...

Human mathematical abilities comprise both learned, symbolic representations of number and unlearned, non-symbolic evolutionarily primitive cognitive systems for representing quantities. However, the mechanisms by which our symbolic (verbal) number system becomes integrated with the non-symbolic (non-verbal) representations of approximate magnitude (supported by the Approximate Number System, o...

We constantly use numbers in our everyday lives, from estimating how long it will take us to get from A to B to being able to use numerical information to make financial decision. How do we acquire these numerical and mathematical skills? The present paper reviews evidence from studies with animals, infants, children and adults using both neuroscientific and behavioral methods (such as the meas...
متن کاملTraining the approximate number system improves math proficiency.
Humans and nonhuman animals share an approximate number system (ANS) that permits estimation and rough calculation of quantities without symbols. Recent studies show a correlation between the acuity of the ANS and performance in symbolic math throughout development and into adulthood, which suggests that the ANS may serve as a cognitive foundation for the uniquely human capacity for symbolic ma...
